ART on the ROAD
A small newspaper article.I felt irritation when reading the almost naïve announcement that the restoration of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam would be € 200,000,000 in excess of the budget! It made me wonder what the maximum price should be for organizing an exhibition. In general, how much money is needed to be able to show your work? At the same time I was thinking of a concept for a logistics firm that wanted to distinguish itself from other companies. I was also working on the interior of an office building for a foreign relation. I always do that by using scale models – which means me cutting and pasting basically - in order to get a better picture of the effect of a certain size on a particular wall. Those were the three tasks that lay in front of me that morning. I combined them and voila! the lorry project ART ON THE ROAD was born. I talked about my plans with WELSI, a Venlobased company. I wanted to use ten lorries and/or trailers for an exhibition on wheels. After having sat round the table a few times during which the technical and financial aspects were discussed, they decided to participate and foot part of the bill. They would also make available 10 articulated lorries. Halfway June 2007 the photo shoot took place at the Prince Clausplein near Den Haag and the vehicles were presented on the grounds of the Floriade (an international horticultural exhibition to be held in 2012) in Venlo.
